The Other Johnstone Syer.
In a parallel career as an international rally co-driver in the sixties and seventies, Johnstone Syer participated at the top end of the sport in practically every corner of the world and partnered some of the best known rally drivers during that period including Logan Morrison, Andrew Cowan, Brian Culcheth, Roger Clark, Tony Pond and Kenjiro Shinozaka. Driving in " Works " Teams such as BMC, British Leyland, Mercedes, Peugot Talbot, Opel and Mitsubishi, many successes were achieved including outright wins in Jamaica, Hong Kong, Thailand, Ivory Coast and, of course, Scotland. In 1970, he and Brian Culcheth were runners-up to Hanu Mikola on the London-Mexico World Cup Rally - probably the longest rally ever held.
In the eighties, he competed five times in what is generally regarded as the toughest motorsport event in the world - The Paris-Dakar Rally. In 1985 he and Andrew Cowan were 2nd overall driving a Mitsubishi Pajero.
His first event was in 1956 on a Dunfermline Car Club Sunday afternoon rally with his brother, Bill Syer, in a Morris Minor and his last serious event was the 1988 Paris Dakar with Andrew Cowan in a Pajero. In 1993, he partnered Andrew Cowan on the London - Sydney Marathon Classic Rally in the Hillman Hunter with which Andrew won the original event in 1968.
